Trip to Sweden 2002

Gällivare (SWE)  30.6. 2002

The idea of going to Sweden came to me when I saw an article in our breedmagazine "Göötti" written by Johanna Seppälä. When we met in Kajaani dog show on January 2002 we talked about going to Sweden together. Our destination was going to be Gällivare, in Northern Sweden. The judge there were Kurt Nilsson, who had judged our dogs before and liked what he saw.

The trip to Sweden

Start , Saturday 29.6.

My trip began at 4 PM from Joensuu, my hometown. I was supposed to pick Johanna up from Oulu railwaystation. Oulu is little less than 500 kms from Joensuu, so I had some driving to do. I was in Oulu about 10 PM and Johanna's train came at eleven. I picked her and her dog, bitch named Konnunkodon Arwen Aamukaste (Keiju) up and we headed towards the border. There were no one there so we crossed over to Sweden and headed towards Gällivare. We arrived at 4 AM on Sunday. We found a resting place where we parked the car and slept in it the rest of the night. When we woke up we headed to the showgrounds.

The show day , Sunday 30.6.

The weather was partly rainy, partly sunny and it changed quickly! We found the show grounds easily. We put up our tent and waited for the rings to start. First it was Jonni's turn. There were two other dogs in the Open class and one in the Champion class. So in order to become S Ch Jonni had to win his class. To my surprise he behaved well and won! So he would become S Ch! He did even better and became the best dog! So he got the CACIB too!! Johanna's dog Keiju won the biches and then there were two Finnish dog competing who would become BOB and BOS. Kurt Nilsson liked Jonni better so he was BOB! I was VERY happy, because this was only the second time that Jonni had been BOB! And this happened in Sweden, the country were SVs come from!
Because jonni was BOB we stayed until Group competitions. There Jonni did not succeed.

Jonni in the Group competition

Because SV is a Swedish breed we participated in a copetition called Blå/Gula Hund. It is only for dogs that are BOB and are of a Swedish breed. When we were waiting for the ring to start it sarted to rain heavily and when it was time to go to the ring we were both soaking wet! However, the judge did not mind about our "wet look" and placed Jonni third!!! I was so happy!
There was another additional competition called Bästa Par which is Best Brace. We entered our dogs in that, too. You could do that there, you did not have do it beforehand.

Additional competitions

Bästa Par

Bästa Par (Best Brace) is competition were one handler takes two dogs of the same breed to the ring. The judge places different pairs depending on how good they look together. Jonni and Keiju look much alike and they both have tails so judge liked the pair and placed them second! The winners were a pair of miniature poodles. Third were australian terriers. Johanna did well handling two SVs together! Jonni was behaving well first, but they went to the ring he smelled somtehing on the ground. That smell disturbed his performance in the ring a bit after that.

Journey home

After the last ring we packed our things and headed home. We stopped at the border, in Haaparanta, in Sweden. There we took pictures of our victorious dogs. I took Johanna to Oulu where she was in good time before her train left. I left her there to wait for her train and headed towards Joensuu.

At right is the picture I took in Haaparanta. From left are Jonni, Johanna and Keiju and their Bästa Par rosette.

On my way home I had to sleep in the car some hours. It started rainig again and when I saw elks (moose) near the road I thought better to stop and sleep a bit so I would not drive an accident! Finally I was at home at 6 AM on Monday. We both were tired but happy! The trip had been succesful and and we had had lot of fun!
